A governor in the making
Ryan and associate head coach Greg Gard like to say that Taylor will be the governor after his basketball career is over because of his strong character, the way he interacts with the public and his intelligence.
Much of that was developed from Taylor’s observations of his parents as well as adhering to their messages.
Louis Taylor said the messages are: “Value practice; value how you play; image is important. You just have to be careful how you present yourself because there are a lot of folks who are watching.

Taylor has almost always been surrounded by success. He had friends and schoolmates whose parents were Minnesota Supreme Court justices (Kathleen Blatz), a Best Buy CEO (Brad Anderson) and sports heroes like the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Sam Mitchell and the Minnesota Twins’ Kirby Puckett.
Taylor learned from Puckett, who died of a stroke in 2006, that it was important to portray a strong public image.
“I was at a school carnival and I remember standing on the lawn in front of our school with my dad and we were talking to Kirby,” Taylor related. “He was talking about how important it was, as an athlete, to carry yourself well in public. About a month later all that stuff happened to him with that woman. It was kind of ironic.”
