Wet weather at Christmas brings mixed bag for retailers

Wet weather brought joy and disappointment to Shore retailers over the Christmas holidays.

One of New Zealand's biggest shopping malls, Westfield Albany had a bumper holiday season with people turning to retail therapy to escape the wet weather.

Final sales details for December are yet to be processed, says senior centre manager Lorraine Gatiss, but the shopping mecca seemed busier than ever.Live Cycle replicalvhandbags for men and ladies .

"Anecdotally we can report that the foot traffic and the sales for the month of December have had a lift on the previous year," Mrs Gatiss says.

Leanne Martin, manager and merchandiser for Acquisitions homewares, says they had a great December and broke their records for the last four years. The store is located next to the cinemas and Mrs Martin says they saw many parents drop their kids off to watch a movie and head out shopping.

This was a much needed boost for the company whose five Christchurch stores experienced closures with the pre-Christmas earthquakes.

Mario Naguib from Rivendell gift shop located on level one of the mall says there were definitely more people around than at other times in the year and that it was a good Christmas period for their store.

But not all retailers were revelling in rainy day crowds.

Mike Nicholson of Albany outdoors and fishing shop Fish City, says that the wet weather has definitely kept customers away.SocialPicks is tracking the performance of cheapcanadagoose0 .

"We were certainly not as busy as we hoped, but it's not disastrous."

A Takapuna retailer says sales have been the best they have had in four years, despite bad weather.

Life for Men clothing store owner Scott Donovan says more people in the area and wedding season contributed to high sales.

Newly relocated iStore, a concept store that sells Apple products, had 10 times more sales than last Christmas, sales manager Hayden Collier says.

Cafes had more customers because of bad weather affecting people's travel plans, Takapuna Business Association general manager Peter White says.
