When Annie Potts lived in New York, she could always spot the women from Dallas.
"They had shopping bags up their arms and you could hear their accents three blocks away," she says. "There were gaggles of them and they always came in for Fashion Week."
Now, Potts is playing one of them. As the mother of Leslie Bibb on "GCB," she's part of the generation that believed in decorum and decoration, not desperation.
Gigi -- the character she plays -- is loosely based on her own mother, a friend of the show's executive producer Robert Harling.Learn more about Largest Discount goodchloehandbags. Carter -- her "Designing Women" costar -- "had a great, rich laugh. All I had to do to find the character was think of Dixie's big laugh."
While Potts was born in Nashville, raised in Kentucky and educated at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., she doesn't have a point of reference for the second-generation Dallas women who populate "GCB." More "b" than "c," they plot and connive like mean high school girls. "I don't really remember any mean girls in my high school," she says. "But I'm 60. It was a more gentle time."
Playing Bibb's mother is no big deal, she says. "I have a 31-year-old son, so it's not much of a stretch. I'm just thrilled to be here and still employed in a big juicy role."
"Designing Women" and "Desperate Housewives" are two obvious templates. But, Potts says, "GCB" doesn't have to fall in line to find an audience.
"Southern women are broad and vital and funny and fierce," she says. "Just as 'Designing Women' did, Bobby (Harling) corrals all that and makes a really astonishing, flavorful bunch of chili.High quality replica womencanadagoosecoats of well known brands ."
Hot and fiery? Warm and comforting? "There are some of us who are really sweet -- I played that character in 'Designing Women' -- and then some of us were a little naughtier. We know who those are."

How to Waterproof Your Winter Sports Apparel
Many winter hunting and fishing jackets are made from waxed cotton and over time the fabric needs to be reproofed. If the fabric is not reproofed periodically, it tends to lose its ability to repel water. In most instances, the clothes need to be reproofed once a year.
Some winter sportsmen take their clothes to a professional for re-proofing. Depending on the reproofer and the items that need treating, this could cost $35 to $45 per item. Others are more do-it-yourself types. I happen to be a do-it-yourself kind of gal. I have found the reproofing process to be inexpensive and easy to complete at home. A 200ml can of reproofing wax will generally cost you $12. The worst aspects of the whole job are the mess and the time involved. If you can live with those two things, you may want to give it a try.
Here's how to do it yourself:
Supplies
In order to complete this project you will need a can of reproofing wax, a cloth, and a blow dryer.
Clean the Fabric
Start by removing any dirt from the jacket with a moistened, lint free cloth. Whatever you do, do not use cleaners of any type. Doing so will damage the fabric. All you need is plain water. You'll also want to avoid saturating the clothing. Let the wet spots dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
Heat the Fabric and Wax
I have found that heating the jacket before adding the reproofing wax is helpful in getting it to absorb the wax more fully. There are a few ways to do this depending on the item involved.A client requested a video to promote his authenticsunglasses site.Best replicalvhandbags Have you spent a lot of time looking for the best replica watch for you? At one time we lived in an old house with radiators. I'd place the jacket over the radiator to warm the fabric up. I've also seen people throw their jackets into the clothes dryer on a low setting or place them outside in the sun for a few hours. This was a fraction of diorhandbags in Beverly Hills. You'll also need to warm the reproofing wax. You can do this by creating a double boiler and heating the wax on the stove or heating it in the microwave.

Haphazardly slathering on a thick layer of surface wax is not going to accomplish that goal. It's just going to leave you with a big mess.
Reheat the Fabric
Once you've managed to coat the fabric with a thin layer of wax, you'll need to apply heat to the fabric with a hand-held blow dryer. If possible, purchase a professional blow dryer from a beauty supply shop. They tend to heat up faster and blow hotter than a household blow dryer. I can tell you that from experience. My parents were licensed hair dressers and I've had the opportunity to use both kinds of hair dryers. Unfortunately, most professional beauty supply shops won't let you buy one without presenting a cosmetology license first. After you've successfully reheated the surface of the jacket, rub the fabric until the reproofing wax completely covers all areas and gets absorbed evenly. Then hang the jacket up and let it dry.

Sketches of Spain
Owned by French luxury giant LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A.) and creatively helmed by British designer Stuart Vevers,The next important aspect of cheapjackets lies on their appearances. the heartbeat of luxury leather brand 'Loewe' remains firmly rooted in its Spanish heritage in every way.
Cheong Phin spoke to the creative director about the Spanish connection after presenting his Loewe Spring/Summer 2012 collection in Hong Kong
SINCE taking over as creative director of Loewe in 2008 (after a successful stint at Mulberry), Stuart Vevers has brought a newness to the 165-year old luxury brand while keeping true to its heritage of quality leather and beautiful craftsmanship.
He redesigned the 1975 Amazona bag, for instance, with bold and playful colours, metal parts and new construction, transforming it into the label's best-selling product and, pushed the leather brand forward by taking to the runway a ready-to-wear collection of apparel and leather accessories in Paris Fashion Week every season.
From the slouchy "Granada" hobo to shooting a campaign for this season's new "Flamenco" bag in Barcelona and incorporating the rich tile designs of the Alhambra Palace in southern Spain for the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, there is always an overriding Spanish flavour present in Vevers' vision for Loewe.
Q: What was the first thing you did when you joined Loewe in 2008?
A: I changed the logo from the finer text to a bolder "Loewe Madrid 1846" -- because the brand needs to be proud of what it stands for, which includes a leather expertise that traces back more than 165 years and I wanted people to know that Loewe is from Spain (not France as thought by many based on the LVMH connection).
It was also important for me to create a language of clothing for Loewe,Buy cosmeticbagfactory online at Goldsmiths quality jewellers. which was better known for its bags,You can find all the ralphlaurenpolo you need here. and I wanted the clothing to have a strong point of view with a focus on leather, obviously, and fabrics for print.
Q: What brought about the strong Spanish connection in your vision for the brand?
A: It's interesting when you go to Spain into a brand like Loewe.
The Spanish-ness of the brand gives me a point of difference.
Today, there are many French and Italian luxury houses, but there is only one luxury house in Spain and that is Loewe.
Spanish culture is known all over the world for its amazing art and others, and the Spanish connection allows me to make Loewe more unique.
Q: Which are your favourite pieces from the Spring Summer 2012 collection?
A: The super lightweight leather pieces at the beginning of the show where you can reverse and wear on either the napa or suede side.
The construction of the garment is perfect from the inside and on the outside in every aspect.
For bags,Swiss goodskylanterns offer genuine timepieces from Omega. the slouchy "Granada" shoulder bag which has an easy soft shape with masculine touches and leather handcrafting.
Q: Who is the Loewe woman you design for?
A: The Loewe woman is grown up, pulled together and groomed with a noble attitude.Get great deals for nonwovenbagfactory on eBay!
She's young and a little bit provocative hence the bold colours.
It's what I've discovered about the characteristic of women in Spain, my favourite being Paloma Picasso.
Q: Your future plans?
A: Keep pushing the brand forward and being relevant by doing collaborations with artists for print and different designers (like Katie Hillier) whom I admire; refurbishing our existing stores at an aggressive pace with the new Peter Marino-design concept which is more in tune with the brand's new direction and, grow more in terms of Loewe's rare personal service and made-to-order, not just for bags but across clothes and accessories.

School cafeteria lunch vs. brown bag packed at home
As parents, we like to think we know what's best for our own children. So when someone else steps in and does something that undermines the way we've decided to care for our kids, there's a good chance we're going to get upset.
Recently, a teacher decided that a 4-year-old preschooler's brown bag lunch wasn't good enough, so it was taken away and she was given chicken nuggets from the school's cafeteria.
It all happened at a North Carolina elementary school. According to news reports, the mother of the young girl packed her a lunch containing a turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips and apple juice.
A teacher at the school decided the young student's lunch wasn't up to par,There is one amazing online store with 100s of rolexuhrenshop . so she dumped it, and gave the girl chicken nuggets, vegetables and milk. And her mom was forced to pay for it.
Imagine, as a parent, getting that phone call — that the meal you provided for your child was so unhealthy, fried chicken was a better alternative.
"I don't feel that I should pay for a cafeteria lunch when I provide lunch for her from home," the mother wrote in a complaint to her state representative.
The mother said that while her daughter eats vegetables at home, she knew she would not eat them at school,Offering a huge selection of goodchloehandbags online store . so she did not pack any in her lunch. And wouldn't a slice of cheese count as a serving of dairy, anyway?
The girl was part of the North Carolina Prekindergarten Program, a state-run program which follows U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines for a healthful lunch. By USDA standards, a healthful lunch is defined as a serving of milk,Visit the premier hermeshandbags in Melbourne Australia. two servings of fruits or vegetables, one serving of grain and one serving of meat or protein.
If my calculations are correct, and if the juice was 100 percent juice, the young girl nailed those guidelines. And as the parent of a 3-year-old, I'd like to know of any child around that age who could consistently eat all those servings in just one sitting.
"You have to work with what you know children will eat, especially when they're away and not under your supervision," said Amanda Evans, a registered dietician at Charlevoix Area Hospital.
Evans said she understands the mother's plan — to pack what she knew her daughter would eat at school — a healthy sandwich, a banana, chips and juice, then make sure she ate her veggies at home.
"If she's getting her veggies at home because she's a picky eater and her mom watches her, I don't see a problem. You just have to work with them," Evans said. "Chicken nuggets, in my opinion, are not a healthy alternative since they are most likely fried and the breading is typically white flour that is refined."
Officials at the North Carolina school have since said the teacher made a mistake.
And while the USDA does monitor school lunch programs, a representative for the agency said food brought to school by students is the responsibility of parents — not the government and not the school.
There's no doubt that the eating habits of Americans, especially those of our children, need to be addressed. The Centers for Disease Control says 17 percent of children and adolescents are now considered obese. That is triple the rate from a generation ago.
And while school cafeteria lunches will see an overhaul in the coming months — the first in more than 15 years — not all children head through that lunch line each day. A 13-year-old former Port Perry girl suffered 37 knife wounds when she was attacked in the bedroom of one of two people accused of killing her, jurors heard today as the first-degree murder trial got under way in Brampton court.

City Council to work on a solution for city's plastic bag litter problem
Two plastic shopping bags caught in live oak trees outside City Hall on Tuesday set the backdrop for an hours-long discussion about the problem.
The bags became fodder for a rally held by the Coastal Bend Surfrider Foundation where about 50 residents gathered in support of a fee to discourage use of plastic bags. The conversation later continued inside City Hall where City Council members discussed the proposal and other ways to tackle the plastic bag litter problem, which costs the city about $190,000 a year in cleanup.
Council members agreed the city has a litter problem and needs to have tougher laws and enforcement but stopped short of giving consensus about a bag fee.
Mayor Joe Adame wants the community to work together on a solution within the next two to three months.
"The easy decision is to ban plastic bags," he said.In Style Accessories collecting mencanadagooseparka to donate to shelters. "We have got to figure out a unique way to change people's behavior in the community."
Some City Council members supported the idea of a plastic bag fee, while others said it's not the government's place to tell businesses what to do.
There was some consensus among the council, including an idea for public anti-litter campaign to put more teeth behind the city's litter ordinance, and ramping up litter enforcement. Some council members said it might be effective to embarrass those caught littering by putting their faces in the newspaper or on TV.
People know littering is wrong and the city won't change that behavior without a stronger incentive, said several residents who spoke during public comment.
"We are going to have something stronger than an educational purpose if we are going to make a difference in the litter blowing around on our streets," said Cliff Schlabach, president of the Coastal Bend Surfrider Foundation. "There is a whole lot of energy going into this effort and I hope we are able to tap into it."
Three schoolchildren from Metro E read essays they wrote about the environmental problems caused by plastic bag litter.
"It's a really bad thing,Most bestchloehandbags can ship the same day FREE via Ground shipping." student Nathaniel Ramirez said. "We need to take responsibility for our Earth."
Many who spoke during public comment supported the Coastal Bend Surfrider Foundation proposal for a city ordinance to assess a plastic shopping bag fee. The fee would encourage retail customers to bring their owns bags or pay $1 per transaction to use plastic bags.
Most of the money collected would pay for litter cleanups, education and more code enforcement officers.IWC watches are warranted by our omegawatches for a period of one year from the original date of purchase. Some would go to retail stores to cover administrative costs.
The discussion about a plastic bag ban, which for the past two years remained at city committee level, recently gained momentum after the local Surfriders chapter took up a national initiative called Skip the Plastic. The initiative encourages people to bring reusable bags for shopping.

It's facts like those that prompted resident Katy Frontell to join the local efforts. She carried a sign that said "Our cities' health and beauty vs. convenience," during the Surfrider-led rally outside City Hall.
"We definitely can't eliminate (plastic bags), but we can reduce it," she said.
Several residents asked the council to be courageous and take a stand against the problem so Corpus Christi would not be the last city to do something about it.
Brownsville adopted a plastic bag fee last year, becoming the first Texas city to adopt the ordinance. Three other cities, Fort Stockton, South Padre Island and Pecos, passed similar ordinances. Ordinances also are proposed in Austin, San Antonio and McAllen.
Others offered a different proposal for curbing plastic bag use. The city could offer businesses incentives instead of forcing them to collect a fee, said Allan Johnson, owner of local laundry chain Peerless Cleaners. Stores that don't offer plastic bags or reduce the number they use should in return receive incentives from the city, he said.

Designer wear for children
WELL-OFF Malaysian parents, too, indulge their children in designer wear, judging by the array of high-end brands available for the young ones.
Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci,The great selection of wholesale shoppingbagfactory at TradeTang. Paul Smith, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Armani and Ralph Lauren are among the luxury fashion houses that have launched their collections aimed at children and youth – from infants to teenagers – here.
The apparel is available mostly in Kuala Lumpur at major shopping malls like Suria KLCC, Pavilion KL and Starhill Gallery, which are located in the bustling tourist belt. While foreign shoppers are obviously a very important sector of the target clientele, local buyers are fast catching up too.
Though the concept of designer wear for children is relatively new on our shores, local kids and teens garbed in expensive, stylish clothing are becoming increasingly common as compared to, say, 10 years ago, when just about everyone would balk at spending more than RM300 on a handbag. Worth It: One Bag to Wash Them All
Much unlike many a magazine editor who recommends you buy all sorts of crap that they most likely got for free, your Jezebel staff doesn't get jack shit (other than books, unsolicited). And that's how it should be. But on our own time,Our Gucci online store diorhandbags. in our personal lives,The following are some of the steps included in buying replicalvhandbags. we still buy stuff. So this is Worth It,Buy these replicalvhandbag on line. our recommendation of random things that we've actually spent our own money on. These are the things we buy regularly or really like,Egypt's Amina Diab forges ahead with nonwovenbagfactory collection. things we'd actually tell our friends about. And now we're telling you.
Yeah, okay — I know I'm supposed to be hand-washing all my bras and tights in pure lavender oil and then laying them flat to dry on a bed of potpourri in a darkened but well-ventilated room. Somehow, though, all I usually have time for is throwing them in the washing machine as though they were mere t-shirts. Fortunately, now I can do without fear.
Many of you may already be familiar with the incredible time-saver that is the delicates bag.Take advantage of our chloehandbags today. You just put your lingerie, hosiery, and that one shirt that says "hand wash" but that you're too lazy to really hand-wash all in the bag, zip it up, and wash it cold with your other stuff. It's not as good for your delicates as the lavender-oil-and-potpourri treatment, but it's way faster — and it's a lot better than just tossing them into the machine naked. I've been a devotee of the bag approach for years, but my life got way better when I discovered the Tide Wash Bag.
A friend recommended the ol' TWB to me in grad school, when she noticed my sad delicates bag full of giant holes that bras would occasionally slip through. "Oh yeah," I said, "that's just what happens." Not to the TWB, she explained, and she's right — this motherfucker is durable. I've had it for years, and it has yet to spring a bra-leak despite hundreds (thousands?) of washes. It also dries quickly — you can pretty much take it out of the machine, pull your delicates out, and put it right back in a drawer. Someday perhaps I will be the kind of person who treats her bras with the TLC they deserve. Until then, the Tide Wash Bag limits the consequences of my laziness.

Mee-ow! Brit editor has claws out for Upton
WE are informed that model Kate Upton adorns the cover of a "swimsuit edition" of Sports Illustrated, something this otherwise stolid magazine apparently does every year, for some reason.
Kate is widely considered to be somewhat attractive. But not by British fashion-mag editor Sophia Neophitou, who handles casting for the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show.Get great deals for burberryhandbags on eBay! She told the N.Y. Times that "we would never use" Upton for that show (although the model has been in the VS catalogue).
Neophitou says Kate's look is "too obvious... with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."
Err, could we have a saucer of milk for this person, please?
Kate's 19.

Six Grammys? Duh!
Of course she's happy
WE always figured, based on her sappy songs, that Adele would be something of a sad sack as a person.
We're wrong, she says. In the March issue of Vogue mag, she acknowledges that many people think she's "miserable" because of her I-just-got-dumped songs, and that folks who meet her are "surprised" to learn that she's not.
Now, she says, she's finished doing breakup songs, because she's "done being a bitter witch."
Clever of Vogue to have this article coming out just after her big comeback and her six-trophies night at the Grammy Awards. She's 23.

HUGH Hefner's son Marston was arrested the other night, in Pasadena, after his girlfriend, Claire Sinclair, the Playboy 2011 Playmate of the Year, told cops he had attacked her.
Marston, out on $20,000 bail, is denying her claims that he punched and kicked her. She also says he refused to let her leave their house after the incident.
His father -- often called sexist, but never, as I recall, accused of physical violence against women -- told People mag that, "If they care about each other, they'll patch it up." Hugh's middle name is Marston.

Piggy! Miss Piggy!
Who are you wearing?
CONGRATULATIONS to fashion designer Marc Jacobs, who took himself un-seriously enough to whip up a gown for Miss Piggy to wear at the BAFTA awards, some British thing, the other night.
Jacobs, who is creative director at Louis Vuitton these days, made a copy of the gown that starlet Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore in a recent Vuitton ad, says the Telegraph: a "voluminous, blush-pink ball gown, embellished with a gold, sequin bow at the waist.... The outfit even comes complete with a miniature replica of the monogrammed bag toted by Rosie."
Could you imagine that pretentious twit Karl Lagerfeld doing anything like that? He'd be too busy lecturing Miss Piggy about her weight.

Federal budget mixed bag for commercial fisheries
The federal budget provides a mixed bag for commercial fisheries in the coming fiscal year.
Based on the preliminary budget released last week, funds for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration went from $4.7 billion to $5.5 billion, an increase of about $750 million.
Within the NOAA budget, funding for the National Marine Fisheries Service is $1 billion, a drop of $15 million from the last fiscal year. Out of NMFS' Fiscal Year 13 budget, $174 million will fund science and management of fisheries. NMFS oversees more than 80 percent of Alaska's fisheries, those that occur in federal waters from three to 200 miles from shore.
The largest increase in funding, $36 million,my wife's gift for my mom was authenticmonclerjackets . will go to a new line item called National Catch Share programs. Industry expert John Sackton of Seafood.com said the agency does not predict an increase in catch share programs over the next five years. Instead, most of the money will pay for implementation, observer coverage, monitoring and other startup costs.
"The rationale for catch shares," Sackton said, "is that NOAA believes these programs are the best way to rebuild fish stocks to maximum sustainable yield, which would lead to a 54 percent increase in overall value of U.S. fisheries, worth more than $2 billion at the docks."
One red flag is that money for catch share programs comes from a transfer of $17 million from cooperative research programs.
"Cooperative research is used for the payments NMFS makes to industry, often including matching funds, for work involving commercial vessels, gear modifications and other developments which have had spectacular success in areas such as bycatch reduction," Sackton explained.
Another spectacular success set for elimination is fishing vessel safety research.Egypt's Amina Diab forges ahead with ralphlaurenpolo collection. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health is set to lose all research funding for its Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing Sector, about $19.6 million. Of that, the budget for fishing safety programs is a mere $1.5 million.
"I am very disappointed," said Jerry Dzugan, director of the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association in Sitka. "It's interesting that those are three of the highest-risk groups for workers in the country."
Dzugan said funding cuts have become an annual thing because of lack of support within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the parent agency for NIOSH.
"Although it touts fishing safety research as one of its most successful programs, it is a low priority within CDC," he said.
When the president's budget came out last week, Dzugan said, he was prompted to investigate the budget of another risky industry.
"The mining industry in the U.S. gets $53 million of research inter-prevention efforts from the federal government. The fishing vessel safety program that NIOSH is doing gets $1.5 million. That's about 3 percent of the budget that mining safety gets," he said.
Dzugan said both industries have 45 to 65 work-related deaths a year on average, but the fatality rates are far different.
"When you look at ...Learn more about Largest Discount mulberryhandbags. the number of fatalities per 100,000 people, fishing vessels have something between 100 and 200 fatalities per 100,000 on average. "There is just no comparison to the risks in those industries and the lesser amount of funds they are getting. ..Intensify your own Grace with guccihandbags.. It makes no sense to me whatsoever."
The president's proposed budget now goes to the House of Representatives and then to the U.S. Senate before it is finalized.

Designer Michael Bastian, who graduated from Babson College in 1987, designed his entire Fall/Winter 2012 line around his memories of Boston from the 1980s. He presented the collection yesterday at Fashion Week.
"This is my most personal season to date," the designer said. "I was going to school in Wellesley, and basically spent my whole four years trying to get into the city. I was riding the T back and forth. I really just fell in love with that town."
Bastian said his intention with the collection is to celebrate a very specific Boston moment - when the preppy movement was in full swing and the local garage band scene was exploding. Internationally, a mod culture revival was burgeoning - think tight suits,Essential-Watches.com sells only 100% ralphlaurenpolo. skinny ties, and motor scooters - through the popularity of ska bands such as the English Beat and the Specials.
"There was really just this great energy going on with the music, sexylingeries bulbs are a great way to save energy and money." he says. "A lot of my friends got into the mod scene, so I got pulled in, too."
The collection even includes T-shirts with faux Boston businesses,With the boom of guess cosmeticbagfactory boutiques. such as the fictitious South End Boxing Club. The reliable Aquatimer cheapchaneljewellery.
"Boston's such a unique city," Bastian says. "I feel like 50 percent of its DNA turns over every semester. You've got the core basic solid conservative preppy Bostonians, and then you have this huge wave of students that come in and change the face of the city, it's an old city, but a perpetually young city at the same time. When you put those two together, they weirdly coexist."
To create the collection, he tells the story of three friends through fashion - based on Bastian and two of his Babson buddies. One is slightly nerdy (that's Bastian), one is the cool girl from California (that's the mod influence), and the third is the college jock. The clothes are updated versions of what these three students would have worn in the 1980s.
"I know it works because I lived it," he says. "That girl had such a strong sense of style and personality that she pulled me into that orbit, and she pulled this sweet macho jock guy into that orbit. She made him wear black penny loafers and skinny jeans and cut his hair. Then we would all go out. So I knew this was realistic, at least for its time."
It's not only Bastian looking to colleges and Boston for inspiration. For his Fall/Winter 2012 collection, designer Luis Fernandez of Number:Lab, used the Ivy League style of famed architect and engineer Buckminster Fuller to inspire his updated preppy collection. Fuller graduated from Milton Academy and then attended Harvard. The Number:Lab collection is less literal in its Boston references than Bastian's, but hints of crimson are still there.
For his collection, which is designed for Gant, Bastian shot an ad campaign at iconic Boston locations, like the Union Oyster House. It was perfect for the current preppy trend raging in menswear.
"Preppy never goes away," he says. "It just has its moment every 15 years, and then it goes back underground. But I'm looking at all these pictures of the things that I was wearing back then, and they're all the things that I'm wearing now. In general you could transport me back into that time and I wouldn't feel out of place."

Iowa 9th grader becomes a compost evangelist
New trash cans popped up in the cafeteria at Prairie Point Middle School and Ninth Grade Academy earlier this month.

It's all part of Lilly Brown's plan to save the world.
The 15-year-old ninth-grader is trying to get the school to start putting its food waste in compost piles as opposed to sending it to landfills with the rest of the garbage.Buy cheap high quality oakleymenssunglassesstore Watches.
"I like helping the Earth and the environment and this is such an easy thing that just about everybody can do to help," she said.
The problem with sending food waste to landfills is that it produces methane as it decomposes, which can contribute to global warming. Compost piles give off carbon dioxide — a less severe greenhouse gas than methane — as well as produce fertilizer.
Brown has taken a methodical approach to convincing her school that composting is worth its time. She weighed all the school's garbage after lunchtime every day in the month of December to get an idea of how much trash students produce on an average day. It came out to about six large bags a day for a total of 170 pounds.
Now she's doing the same thing with the new compostable garbage to show what percentage of the school's trash could be disposed of in a more green fashion. So far, it is averaging about 110 pounds a day — about 64 percent.
It's a dirty job, but Brown said she's excited that she's gotten some of her fellow students interested in composting.
"In the beginning, there was a lot of trash going into the food waste bag, but now a lot of them are sorting," she said.
Unfortunately, the sorted food waste still has nowhere to go and gets put into the trash bin with the rest of the garbage. Brown has a few ideas on ways to remedy this. She planned to meet with Kirkwood Community College officials to set up a possible compost site on its campus. New York Fashion Week gets dark and masculine
NEW YORK - Phillip Lim made his point when the DJ at his Monday afternoon show played the James Brown standard "It's a Man's World." Through the technical difficulties of a hyperactive fog machine, models in panel cape jackets and silver PVC collars neatly summed up Lim's idea of the strong woman in masculine tailoring.
With unapologetic and nuanced nods to superheroes, Lim's ensembles balanced menswear silhouettes with feminine touches such as peplum blouses.
That kind of duality - think the lyric "It's a man's world, but it would be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl" - could have been the mantra for the Fall/Winter 2012 collections being presented at New York Fashion Week.
One look that's been especially visible is military style. Designers have been eschewing flouncy in favor of fierce (apologies, Christian Siriano). Menswear influences have been abundant, and the palettes of some of fashion's most girly designers have faded to gray and black.
"I think we tend to veer toward darker colors as a rule for Fall/Winter," says Elle magazine creative director Joe Zee. "But recently there's been so much color, color blocking, color this, color that. I think people just want to go back to basics."
And there was plenty of basic black and gray at Donna Karan, Christian Siriano, Jill Stuart,Buy guccihandbags from thousands of International exporters. and even the always posh Carolina Herrera, who went to darker shades and neutrals for her runway shows.
"Sometimes I think blacks and neutrals are a palette freshener," Zee says. "You have to clean it up and start over in a way. I think all the black I've seen is really beautiful. I saw gorgeous things today at Theyskens' Theory. At the end of the day, we all love color, we all write about color, but look around. What's everybody wearing here?"
Trends often oddly surface across a wide range of designers during New York Fashion Week. It sometimes appears to be more than a coincidence, as if designers secretly rendezvous behind tall bolts of fabric and agree on the trends for the season. Early in the week, perhaps the most buzzed about trend surfaced in the form of military-inspired jackets, trousers, and dresses.
These varied widely based on the designer's particular style, but there were the epaulets, the brass buttons, and the sharply tailored lines giving the illusion that a small platoon had landed on the catwalks of Lincoln Center.
Even Jason Wu, king of the cocktail dress and preferred designer of first lady Michelle Obama, was showing Chinese military chic in olive green and black at his Friday show. Prabal Gurung's models strutted in fetishistic, military inspired caps,SocialPicks is tracking the performance of hermeshandbags . while the normally preppy Tommy Hilfiger brought out military-inspired trench coats in his women's collection and trotted out models resembling cadets for his men's presentation. In the program for the show, Hilfiger called the look "a personalized take on military precision."
"I don't know if there's a particularly strong reason why we're seeing military," says Joanna Coles, editor of Marie Claire. "But it's sharp, it's tailored, and it's something that a lot of women look good in."
Alexander Wang's show brought out models in militaristic leather jackets, including Gisele Bundchen,Wholesale ralphlaurenhoody for high quality wholesale New ERA Hats products. apparently recovered from the Super Bowl loss her husband,I am a bit confused about purchasing my next authenticmonclerjackets through a website. Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady, suffered. Victoria Beckham, who focused her frocks on fit, also showed splashes of olive with dots of military buttons.
Fashion writers love to emphasize the trends, but for every black pencil skirt and brass button, there were dozens of designers who presented models in non-militaristic, blazing colors. Betsey Johnson, who never met a shade of pink that she didn't like, paid tribute to London's Carnaby Street circa 1967 with go-go ready miniskirts and tights.
Diane von Furstenberg also embraced vibrant colors and graphic prints with ruby pink dresses, rosy red kimonos, monclerouterwear is proudly powered by WordPress and WPMU Theme pack. and a frosted lime paisley jacquard coat. Carlos Miele began his show, a tribute to Brazilian cowboys, by showing black wool ponchos before moving quickly to tangerine and gold. Chris Benz, who is rapidly maturing into a top-drawer designer, spiked his collection with two of the season's biggest trends: bold prints and bolero jackets.
Marc Jacobs ignored it all. He presented an eerie slice of fantasy. Under mammoth fur hats, models were bundled in layers of Shetland stoles, tweed coats, rhinestone sunglasses, and Pilgrim shoes adorned with glittering buckles. Behind it was a set that looked like it was excavated from Tim Burton's brain.
Amid Fashion Week's dark and masculine harshness, the delicious white fantasy land from Jacobs was a welcome and stunning reprieve.
