Things learned, observed in Pacific high school spring sports season Week 4.0

It was noble in concept when then-district superintendent Mike Diekmann put a true DODDS Japan sports circuit on the map for school year 1999-2000.
Schools in far-flung locales, E.J. King, Matthew C. Perry and Robert D.In Style Accessories collecting discountwomencanadagoosecoats to donate to shelters. Edgren no longer had to go longing for competition against their Kanto Plain brethren; they each now have full-fledged schedules in football, volleyball, tennis, cross country, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, track and soccer.
Problem is, the weather sometimes is uncooperative and the calendar always is, at least where tennis, baseball, softball, track and sometimes soccer are concerned.
Purely by chance, the last two weekends have proven to be rain magnets. Heavy rain, sideways rain, the sort of rain that settles in and keeps up all day or all weekend.
Two Kanto Plain track and field meets got called off 17 hours before they were to begin on Saturday, an international-schools meet at Tokyo's Kinuta Park and a DODDS all-comers meet at Camp Zama. This, a week after a combined Japan schools practice meet at Zama got almost completely washed out, except for a few running events. Guess the meet organizers didn't want to take a chance after that March 10 washout. Wise decision.
Baseball and softball were completely out of the conversation on March 9-10 at Zama. What are some new goodbackpackfactory coming out in 2009? Perry, King and Edgren did get in some boys and girls games at Yokota, Zama and Nile C. Kinnick on Friday, but Saturday's action was a wash. Soccer matches did get played at Sasebo, where E.J. King's fields are turfed, and at Iwakuni, where Perry's match organizers got creative in clearing the field; more on that later.
It's an exercise in frustration, especially since most weekends are filled, wall to wall, with long-haul matches on the schedule. It's 360 miles from Tokyo to Misawa, some 560 miles to Iwakuni and 780 to Sasebo. It's much easier to reschedule Kanto Plain matches, when the schools are so much closer. It's nigh onto impossible to reschedule DODDS Japan sports events of most any type once postponed. Worse, there are fewer options for the outlying schools, where international schools are fewer or more distant than in the Kan-to and Japanese schools have their own leagues.
Squeegees are normally associated with tennis courts when rain turns hardcourts into skating rinks. Mark Lange,IWC watches are warranted by our canadagooseparka for a period of one year. Matthew C. Perry's boys soccer coach, continues to make creative use of the court driers on a different sort of court – the soccer pitch.
From 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Lange and his star striker Tyelor Apple, among others, wielded Squeegees to clear off enough water from Lake Perry (Lange's nickname for the school field when it becomes waterlogged due to heavy rain) so that Robert D. Edgren and the host Matthew C. Perry Samurai could play, albeit on a shortened field. The two schools teed it up, then played a mix-and-match game as the two sides used each other's players in a friendly match.Trade Leads for fakerolexwatches, Search ecplaza.net for buying and selling leads,
"Masters in the bag, working on my doctorate," Lange posted on Facebook in response to me calling him, "Lord of the Squeegee.SocialPicks is tracking the performance of replicahandbags ."

London Fashion Week: A-Z of trends

Aspinal is the hot new British heritage brand we're all desperate to get our mitts on. Already closely connected with Liz Hurley,How do internet users feel about uhrenwatchesstore? You can find all the ralphlaurenpolo you need here. the leather label has this year hooked up with Saturdays singer Mollie King, naming a sumptuous crocodile satchel after her. Sound familiar? These handbags (and wallets, and key fobs, and briefcases) are going places.

The beard, once the preserve of hippy-dippy types with a fondness for day-old porridge, is now the fashion accessory for street-savvy gents. We've had Tom Ford, George Clooney, Patrick Grant, of Savile Row label E Tautz, and model David Gandy all sporting rather fetching facial furniture recently. But the news that Disneyland ‘cast members' are finally, after 60 years, allowed to wear their whiskers with pride is surely a sign the beard has come of age.

Perhaps it's a reaction against these difficult times, but rarely have we seen quite so much colour on the catwalks. From sherbet lemon at Louis Vuitton to turquoise at Yves Saint Laurent, burnt orange at Alberta Ferretti and an interesting take on pink and green at Versace (right), this is no season for the shrinking violet (though feel free to wear lots of purple).

Daughters are doing it for themselves, stepping out from behind the shadow of their famous mothers and strutting their stuff on the catwalk. Tali Lennox, Amber Le Bon, Georgia May Jagger, Elettra Rossellini – what's more, Noel Gallagher's 11-year-old daughter Anais is

being touted as the next Kate Moss.

Erdem takes inspiration from the English country garden for its spring/summer collection, with watercolour floral prints and dainty, ladylike gloves. Florals are elsewhere at Christopher Kane, Chloé and Mary Katrantzou. Just watch out for the wasps.

Everyone knows fashion girls never run for a bus; none the less, heels must be taking their toll as the shoe du jour is the flat. Last season we had Prada's brogue brothel creepers, then Balenciaga sent its models down the runway in flats. This season Christopher Kane took things one step further with bejewelled pool shoes while Louise Gray went for flatforms. Common sense at last.

With everyone going gaga for Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the F Scott Fitzgerald classic, it's no surprise we're seeing Great Gatsby-inspired fashion all over the shop. Unsurprisingly, Ralph Lauren (right) is there, with whimsical 1920s-style frocks and cloche hats, while Marc Jacobs has flapper dresses, Jil Sander and Prabal Gurung have dropped waistlines and Corneliani rolled out the double-breasted blazers and long-line coats for chaps.Flashing bright green contact lenses and chloehandbags .

Every summer they pop up, like the geraniums in your herbacious border, trusty old faithfuls that can be relied on to make the season's hit list. This year's hardy perennials are no different. So look out for the nautical theme at (MiH Jeans and Eugenia Kim, metallics at Gucci, Lanvin and Preen and monochrome at Topshop Unique.

The rise and rise of the internet has brought fashion to the masses like never before. With live streamed runway shows,High quality canadagooseparka Product of well known brands . you no longer need to fight with Anna Wintour for a front-row ticket, while bloggers are a new voice unswayed by the power of the glossy advertising pound. Add to that the style apps that tell you what to wear, when, and how to buy it and you have the whole world of fashion in the palm of your hand.

The Queen's diamond jubilee has signalled a new wave of national pride, so as well as Geri Halliwell's ill-advised revival of her Union Jack mini dress for Next, we have red, white and blue bags and purses from Aspinal and a rather jaunty God Save McQueen scarf (above) from Alexander McQueen. All rise.

Willow Smith (left), Suri Cruise, Harper Beckham and precocious blogger Tavi Gevinson – we grown-ups might not like it, but kids are the new fashion powerhouse. So it's only natural that designers make the move into childrenswear too. Many – such as Burberry, Kenzo and DKNY – have been in the market for years but they are being joined by Versace, which has just opened its first Young Versace store in Milan, Duchess of Cambridge favourite Jenny Packham and Japanese high-street giant Uniqlo.

Jonathan Saunders (right) brings us ladylike chic, his look inspired by a 1950s suburban housewife, with pretty printed day dresses,The reliable Aquatimer hermesbirkinreplica. floaty skirts and neat sweaters in shades of mint, sherbet pink and pure, virgin white.

The most hostly anticipated designer collaboration of the year is Marni for H&M. With a campaign shot by Sofia Coppola, starring Imogen Poots and with a sexy soundtrack by Roxy Music, the collection is due in store on

More Duluth families use lunch program as economy takes bite from budgets

Amy Brooks is a single parent of two kids in Duluth with annual wages and child support that total about $14,000.

She is a full-time college student and has part-time work study and serving jobs. She pays $600 in rent plus heat and other utilities each month, and she has a car payment. Her family buys used clothing and has no Internet or cable television.

"We follow a really strict budget," said the 33-year-old. "It's a constant struggle."

Brooks is among the more than 44 percent of Duluth school district families that take part in the federal and state-run free and reduced-price lunch program, a number that has grown steadily from 36 percent five years ago.,authenticmonclerjackets site Card opposition filmy nearby Marker fit true Teixeira on Fabricate return 22 be amount. She has a 4-year-old in preschool and a 7-year-old at Nettleton Elementary, for whom she'll save $450 this year in lunch and milk money.

The number of families taking advantage of the subsidized lunch program is rising, experts say, because of the nationwide loss of middle-class jobs.

Signs of pinched family budgets are seen throughout the schools, Duluth educators say — from kids who can't afford letter jackets and formal dances to more kids working and more families searching out scholarships.

The government and manufacturing jobs that put people "solidly in the middle class" are disappearing,Buy cheap high quality monclerjacketswomens Watches, said Drew Digby, the northeast regional labor market analyst for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

In Duluth, about 19 percent of government jobs and more than 16 percent of manufacturing jobs have been lost since 2001, according to government numbers. "That decline isn't as bad as a lot of places," Digby said, "but those are really good,With the boom of guess canadagooseparka boutiques, middle-class jobs that we've lost."

There has been major growth in health care and customer service jobs, but those aren't all well-paying, he said. There has also been growth in higher education and engineering fields,How do internet users feel about canadagoosesalecheap? which are upper-middle-class jobs, Digby said.

'Surprised they qualify'

To qualify for the lunch program, a household of four can make no more than $41,348; they also qualify if they participate in programs such as the Minnesota Family Investment Program.

The number keeps growing, said Pam Bowe, child nutrition supervisor for the Duluth school district,There is one amazing online store with 100s of chloehandbags . because of the economy and because of efforts to notify families of its existence.

"Some parents I get calls from are surprised that they qualify," she said. "They've never needed us in the past."

Families can apply throughout the year. This year, Bowe said, she got calls for the first time from parents asking to be put on the mailing list to be sure they received the application.

"It helps families reduce the grocery bill; packing a lunch every day for several children is not an easy or cheap process," she said. "If a family is struggling with bills or someone is out of work and you don't have a lot of extra income to spend on fruits and vegetables, we can offer new items students might not have been exposed to."

Based on guidelines, families that qualify for reduced-price lunches of 40 cents are probably not eligible for programs aimed at people in poverty, said Angie Miller, executive director of Community Action Duluth.

"So that makes free and reduced lunch even more important for those right above the poverty line," she said.

Funds from Fujis

Picking apples in a bag, instead of picking through produce-section piles, can help put locally grown fruits and vegetables in school cafeterias.2011 Shoppers search through authenticguccihandbags at Harrods department store during the first day .

Sales of organic Fuji apples in 3-pound bags bearing the Farm to School logo benefit a nonprofit educational effort that began about a year ago in the Rogue Valley. Farm to School's apple program is a partnership between produce distributor Organically Grown Co. in Eugene and about a dozen grocers, four of them in the Rogue Valley.

The latest store to sign on is Sherm's Food 4 Less in Medford, which started stocking the bagged apples Friday. Other participating local grocers are Ashland and Medford food co-ops and Grants Pass Farmers Market.

"We like to support the local farmers, and also we care about the children eating healthy," says Bob Ames, general manager of Sherm's Thunderbird Market.

Although the program's apples are grown in Washington, not Oregon, Farm to School promotes local agriculture both by bringing students to farms and working to incorporate local harvests into school-cafeteria meals.

The sales of apples, says organizer Tom Lively, aren't merely a short-term fundraiser but long-term marketing toward grocers' next generation of customers.

"It just really turns 'em on,The next important aspect of canadagooseparka lies on their appearances. and I think it can be a game-changer," says Lively of introducing kids to food on the farm. Senior account representative for Organically Grown, Lively also served on the board of Willamette Food and Farm Coalition.

Organically Grown makes a $3 handling fee on each 36-pound box of apples containing a dozen bags. Retailers purchase each box for $25 and sell each bag for $3.99,We invite you to visit our latest collection of monclerouterwear. donating 70 percent of the profits to Farm to School programs.

Grocers raised about $5,000 in a short,,canadagooseparkajackets full lines of this brand you can find at our store, test run between April and June last year. This year, customers have nine months instead of three to purchase the apples at four stores locally, instead of solely Ashland Food Co-op, which launched last year's pilot and gave all of its profits on the apples to Farm to School.

Even donating 70 percent of profits is a "huge thing to ask" of grocers,The great selection of wholesale cheapcanadagoose at TradeTang. says Lively. Funds raised — when penciled out per apple — are more than the government provides to Oregon schools for each meal, says Tracy Harding, executive director of Farm to School. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is preparing to announce the availability of competitive Farm to School grants worth up to $100,000, she says.

The fundraiser will continue through June with apples distributed based on consumer demand, says Lively. Apple prices have dropped enough recently that customers likely will pay about a dollar less per bag, he adds.
